Nappy Changing Procedure

It is the policy of this centre to provide a safe and hygienic procedure for changing nappies. We must ensure we provide a clean environment to prevent the spread of disease or infection. In addition, we aim to create an environment that encourages positive interaction between children and the carer during nappy changing procedure.

General Nappy Change Reminders

Never leave a child alone on the nappy change table

  • Change nappies only in the nappy change areas
  • Ensure correct lifting techniques are used at all times
  • Separate nappy change areas from food storage, preparation and eating areas
  • Dispose of soiled nappies properly, as per the nappy changing procedure
  • Wash hands (staff and children) after each nappy change
  • Do not allow dummies, toys, baby bottles, or food on the nappy change bench.

Procedures

  1. Ensure that all items required are within reach e.g. Nappies, wipes, paper towel etc.
  1. Gloves must be worn when changing soiled nappies
  1. Ensure that the change table is in excellent and clean condition with no cracks, creases, holes etc.
  1. Remove the child’s nappy and any other clothing with urine/faeces. Place soiled clothes in a plastic bag and tie securely
  1. Clean the child’s bottom with wipes. Gently wipe from front to back. Wet paper towel may be used to wipe excess faeces from legs and bottom.
  1. Remove each towel immediately and put in the bin. Wrap soiled nappies in plastic bag, tie securely and place in bin.
  1. Remove gloves, before you touch the child’s clean clothes. Remove gloves by peeling them back from your wrists, turning them inside out as you go. Do not let your skin touch the outer contaminated surface of the glove. Place gloves in the bin.
  1. Dress the child. Wash and dry the child’s hands. (Use wet wipes for babies).
  1. Remove child from the change table.
  1. Clean the change table with anti-bacterial detergent and water in spray bottle, paying particular attention to the mat and surrounds and dry with a disposable paper towel.
  1. Wash and dry your hands thoroughly with soap and water and a disposable paper towel.

AT THE END OF EACH DAY, THOROUGHLY WASH THE NAPPY CHANGE MAT AND TABLE WELL WITH DISINFECTANT AND WARM WATER. USE PAPER TOWEL FOR CLEANING AND DRYING THE SURFACE
